What Are Opportunity Classes (OC)?
Opportunity Classes (OC) are specialised classes in selected NSW public schools for high potential and gifted students. They provide a learning environment with greater academic challenge and opportunities for students to develop their abilities alongside other high-potential learners.
Year 5 & Year 6 Placement
Opportunity Classes are offered for students entering Year 5 and continuing through Year 6. Placement is competitive and students are selected through the official NSW Opportunity Class Placement process. Academic strength alone does not guarantee placement.

Opportunity Classes represent one of several pathways available for high potential and gifted students in NSW. They foster critical thinking, deep logic, and collaborative problem-solving among peer cohorts.
What Is the NSW Opportunity Class Placement Test?
The assessment used to select students for Year 5 entry into Opportunity Classes.
Apply in Year 3/4
Applications generally open in November (Year 3) and close in February (Year 4).
Sit Test in Year 4
Students sit the official placement test during Year 4 under exam conditions.
Placement Outcomes
Official placement outcome letters are released to parents later in Year 4.

What’s Included in the OC Placement Test?

Reading Comprehension
Assesses the student’s ability to understand, interpret, and reason from written information across fiction, non-fiction, poetry, reports, and magazine texts.
Mathematical Reasoning
Focuses on applying mathematical understanding and reasoning to solve problems using concepts students learn through school frameworks.
Thinking Skills
Assesses reasoning and problem-solving abilities including spatial reasoning, deductive logic, and argument analysis.
All questions are multiple-choice. Current information states the test is computer-based. Test arrangements and formats may change—always check the latest official information.

No. A Year 2 student is not normally eligible to apply for the Year 5 Opportunity Class Placement Test.

Yes. Year 3 is an ideal time to begin structured preparation for the Opportunity Class pathway.
Students normally apply during the period when they are moving from Year 3 into Year 4, so starting early gives them time to strengthen their core skills before intensive test preparation begins.
A Year 3 preparation program can focus on:

At Curious Learner Academy, the emphasis is on mastering concepts first and progressively developing OC-specific strategies, rather than relying on memorisation or shortcuts.
The NSW Opportunity Class Placement Test currently has three test sections:
- Reading
- Mathematical Reasoning
- Thinking Skills
The Reading section uses different types of texts, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, reports and magazine-style texts. Mathematical Reasoning focuses on applying mathematical understanding to solve problems, while Thinking Skills assesses reasoning and problem-solving ability.
It is therefore more accurate to describe the OC Test as an ability and reasoning assessment, rather than simply an English and Mathematics examination.
The OC Placement Test has three multiple-choice sections:

All questions are multiple-choice. The current NSW Department of Education information states that the test is computer-based.
The three test sections take a total of approximately 110 minutes:
- Reading: 40 minutes
- Mathematical Reasoning: 40 minutes
- Thinking Skills: 30 minutes
Each section has its own time limit. Students therefore need to develop not only strong reasoning skills but also the ability to work accurately and efficiently within a set time.
The Opportunity Class Placement Test is normally held in May while students are in Year 4.
For the 2027 Year 5 intake, the test was scheduled for Friday 8 and Saturday 9 May 2026, with students allocated to attend one test day only. A make-up test was scheduled for 22 May 2026 for eligible students who could not sit the main test because of approved circumstances.
The NSW Department of Education updates the dates each year, so parents should check the official schedule for the relevant intake year.

Opportunity Classes are designed for Year 5 entry, with the application process beginning when students are in Year 3 and the placement test taken in Year 4. There is no normal application pathway for Year 6 entry to an Opportunity Class.
There are limited circumstances where a student who is already in Year 5 may be considered, such as unusual circumstances involving their school year or age. These cases are subject to NSW Department of Education requirements and should not be treated as the standard pathway.
For Curious Learner Academy, a Year 5 student can instead consider our OC Extension & Advanced Learning Program, designed to continue developing advanced reasoning, mathematical thinking, reading and problem-solving skills.
